I agree with you about Christmas. We aren't "exchanging" gifts this year. Have agreed that it's foolish to buy things just for the exercise of buying them.

I grew up the oldest of 8 kids. Since I was 4 years older, and times were hard, I didn't have much of a "childhood". Think that's one reason I hear so much of what you say. (When I was going off to college on a scholarship, my mother asked me if I resented that fact. I was surprised to know that she was aware of it!) Anyway, back to the subject of Christmas. When I was 14 I told my mother---who was Santa Claus---not to get me anything. So little money and so many kids. She did what I asked. I've never forgotten how I felt. Yes, the other kids at least had something. But I still felt mighty down. Mother must have felt bad, because a few years later she did a flip. I got something really expensive (for us) and the other kids didn't fare so well. Then I felt guilty. Can't win!
Was nice to hear that your kids knew what it was all about. Lucky for you that you did have a good job. I think my husband and I did what lots of our generation did. We came from extreme poverty---both of us learned the hard way what it was to be hungry with no food available. So, we limited ourselves to two kids and spoiled them rotten. They never experienced doing without. Now they are spoiling their own kids--with some help from us. The other day a commenter on a blog said that there is sometimes a greater loss in having more things rather than in having fewer. I think she was right!

Hope you have a wonderful time golfing! In warm weather!
