Gumbo Update: 1949 Mercurys are cool

When I was a youngster, speed was no issue. A hunnert mile a hour was the norm. That was in my teens.

My first road ready car was a old 1946 Ford. Go right at bout 80 mile a hour...downhill. This was in 1957, when hot rods came on the scene. Cars was com'n off the showroom floor what would do 80 mile a hour in second gear. Somebody even wrote a song bout it. But my old Ford didn't fit this hot rod scene, it was too slow. It's got to go.

Oh look, a 1949 Mercury with a for sale sign. I bought that '49 Mercury an' that sucker go a hunnert mile a hour. But it was a ugly pea green color. Teen age boys don't drive pea green cars. 49' Mercs are either black or white. No other color would do.

All the chrome was yanked off'n the hood an' sides that 49' Merc. Lead was used to fill in all them holes an' seams....sanded smooth like a baby's butt. No holes an' no seams showed. Only a couple warps from the old timey white gas powered blow torch. White paint was applied. The front end was lowered. Big ol' Chrysler Imperial tires are added to the rear wheels. A haphazard dual exhaust system is added, with loud ass straight thru "cherry bomb" mufflers. The cheap FMC carburetor is replaced with a Stromburg racing carburetor. Yeeee haa, we hit 110 mile a hour on level ground. I are a hot rod guy. Them little high school girls is gonna love my 1949 Mercury.
Look a lot like this one. Think bright white, lowered front end, no chrome an' no sun visor.

My customized hot rod 49' Mercury days only lasted a short time. "Ya gotta check the oil Billy Bob". I blowed that engine to smithereens do'n a burn out in front them cute little high school girls. *think'n Tom Sawyer walk'n that picket fence at Becky Thatcher's  house* Park that blowed up thing in uncles yard an' never touch it again. "Wasted days an' wasted nights". That's a song ya know...Freddy Fender. I had a good $500 in that Merc an' months of modify'n work.

Just thought you should know that.

Boy howdy, when ya just sit on yer ass an' do a bunch of think'n, you go'n in the wrong direction. I cain't believe some the weird stuff I was think'n bout yesterday an' into the early hours of today. But I ain't gonna dwell on it, 'cause this afternoon I'll be think'n in a different direction. I do that ya know.

Made me a trip to the HEB grocery store here in Sinton. Only in Texas. Buy me up some stuff for that gumbo I was talk'n bout. Ate me some grilled pizza for supper. Sadie Mae got the best part, the crust. Will attempt to make gumbo today....but it's rain'n.

Black water tank is full. Need to go to the local RV park for a night an' empty that sucker before it runs over on the bathroom floor. My god, what a awful thought. Ha, may have to go out in the woods for a few days to do my business.

That gumbo.....WARNING....DO NOT EAT BILLY BOB'S GUMBO.
My god, this is the worstest gumbo I ever did taste. Think'n I better go back bout 18 years an' read my recipe again. It freak'n sucks. Ha ha, but it's the right color.

  1. Boy did your post ever bring back some memories. (not all especially good).. like the time my boyfriend drove his (hmm... not exactly stock) '59 Ford 148 mph (on a state highway) and blew off the white walls (those kind that are fake... just kinda falsies).... scared the crap out of me. And I was fool enough to marry that idiot. I think it's time to dump our black tank too ;-)

  2. Be careful what kind of leaves you use while out in the woods doing your business.

My first car was an old 60 Plymouth Valiant with a 1 barrel carburetor that if you had enough straight road you could get it up to 100. It was painted with a powder puff and I had part of a can in the trunk for touch-ups. I also had only one operative brake, the left rear.

  3. When I was a teenager, those Mercs were a hot item. I was driving my Dad's old Desoto. It took awhile, but after I got out of school and started making money, I finally got my dream car. A black 1957 Chevy convertible with a white top and red interior. It had a souped up 1960 283 with full race cam and solid lifters, shaved heads, and an extra huge four barrel carb. It would turn 8000 rpm's but I shifted at 6900 hundred or there abouts. I sold that car for $400.00 bucks. . . boy I wish I had it back.

  4. I think every Merc I ever saw was pea green. That's going back to far for me to remember little details.

  5. Always loved those 19 Merc's, just something about them.
My favourite was a 1956 Plymouth I bought , engine was no good. So Me and a buddy set to work and put a Hemi in it. Awesome, actually do 100mph in first gear, speedo did not go high enough to see how fast it would go, but had to sell it was gonna kill myself for sure. We all have some great memories.

  6. My first car was a 1965 Chevelle... danged thing never went faster than about 50 even downhill. Wasn't till I sold it to a guy who later said "Hey, why did you have a governor on the throttle?" (ahem... Dad???)

  7. This really brings back find memories for me. My grandfather had the exact same Ford that was in your picture, and we hung out the windows as he drove down the highway. Not sure if it had seat belts, but we sure didn't where them as he flew down the roads with that wind blowing through our hair and bugs in our teeth.
